Figures and diagrams

Bird can now produce publication-grade figures and mermaid diagrams directly in the conversation, rather than describing a chart it cannot draw.
  • Figures are generated as real image files, so a figure is something you can take away rather than a screenshot of a screen.
  • Mermaid diagrams render from a fenced block, which suits the things that are genuinely diagrams: a workflow, a decision tree, a sample-handling chain, an experimental design.
Ask in plain language. “Plot these results”, “draw the workflow for this protocol”, “diagram how these samples were split”.

Dropping and pasting files

You can now get a file into the chat box three ways, all equivalent:
  • The paperclip button, which opens a file picker.
  • Drag a file from your desktop or file manager and drop it on the chat box.
  • Paste a file, which in practice usually means a screenshot you have just taken.
Dragging a file used to open it in a new browser tab instead of attaching it, which is the browser’s default for a page that does not handle the drop. The page handles it now. Bower accepts documents, images, spreadsheets, PDFs and research code, including scripts like .R, .Rmd, .jl and .do that many tools reject because the operating system gives them no recognised file type. If a file is too large or is not a type Bower reads, you get told which file and why, and the rest of your selection still attaches.

Generated R and Python code now comes through cleanly. Code inside fenced and inline blocks was being rewritten on its way to the screen, which is what produced R that arrived on a single line and would not run when pasted into RStudio.

Notes

Pasting a table copied out of a document pastes it as text, not as an attachment, because a copied table carries no file. To have Bird read a table, attach the file itself or a photo of it. Full detail in Figures and diagrams and Bird.
