# Manage your account

> Profile, privacy controls, data export, and account settings.

Update your profile, manage your privacy preferences, export your data, and control your account from the Settings panel.

## Update your profile name

<Steps>
  <Step title="Click your avatar in the bottom-left corner of the desktop app" />

  <Step title="Select Profile settings" />

  <Step title="Edit your display name" />

  <Step title="Click Save" />
</Steps>

Your display name appears in notes you create, comments, and member lists in shared workspaces.

## Add your ORCID iD

If you're a researcher with an [ORCID iD](https://orcid.org), saving it on your profile lets Bird answer "what have I published recently?" without you needing to share the iD each turn.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Go to Settings > Profile and find the Research identity section" />

  <Step title="Type your ORCID iD in the canonical 16-digit form (e.g. 0000-0001-2345-6789)" />

  <Step title="Click Save — Bird verifies the iD against ORCID's public API and shows your name back to confirm" />
</Steps>

We only ever read your **public** ORCID profile — your name and the works you've listed publicly. We never access anything from your private ORCID record.

To remove a saved iD, clear the field and click Save. Bird will stop pulling your published works automatically.

<Note>
  Your ORCID iD is also part of the onboarding flow for new accounts. You can skip it during onboarding and add it later from Profile.
</Note>

## Update your workspace name

<Steps>
  <Step title="Go to Settings > Workspace" />

  <Step title="Click the workspace name field" />

  <Step title="Edit the name" />

  <Step title="Click Save" />
</Steps>

Workspace names are visible to all members of that workspace. Changing the name doesn't affect any notes, collections, or member access.

## Change your email or password

Email and password changes are managed from **Settings > Security**. You'll be asked to verify your current password before making changes.

## Privacy controls

Your privacy preferences are in **Settings > Security > Privacy**.

### Analytics cookies

You can control whether Bower collects anonymous usage data. The toggle in the Privacy section lets you enable or disable analytics cookies at any time. When you disable analytics, the page reloads to clear any tracking scripts that were already loaded.

This is the same choice you made on the cookie consent banner when you first signed in — you can change it whenever you like. For details on what is and isn't tracked, see the [cookie policy](/trust-centre/cookies).

### Export your data

Click **Export** in the Privacy section to download a JSON file containing all your personal data: your profile, workspace memberships, projects, artifacts, and audit history across all your workspaces.

Data exports are rate-limited to one request per 24 hours.

## Session management

### Sign out

Go to **Settings > Security > Account Access** and click **Sign out** to end your session on the current device. Other devices remain signed in.

### Revoke all sessions

If you suspect unauthorised access or have lost a device, click **Revoke all** in the Account Access section. This invalidates every active session across all devices immediately. You will be signed out and need to sign in again.

### Automatic idle timeout

Bower automatically signs you out after 30 minutes of inactivity. A warning appears 2 minutes before the timeout, giving you the option to stay signed in.

## Delete your account

<Warning>
  Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. We recommend exporting your data first.
</Warning>

To delete your account, go to **Settings > Security > Danger Zone** and click **Delete my account**. You'll be asked to type "DELETE" to confirm.

**What gets deleted:**

* Your profile (email, name) and authentication record
* Your workspace memberships and OAuth integrations
* Workspaces where you are the sole member, including all content and files

**What gets kept:**

* In shared workspaces, your notes, files, and collections are preserved for the team. Ownership is transferred to the workspace admin.
* Audit logs are anonymised — the record of actions is kept, but your identity is removed.
