# Tables that hold real data

> Resize any column including the last one, band rows for readability, delete several rows at once, and reach the right-hand columns of a wide table without scrolling to the bottom.

A results table is not decoration. It is the part of the note somebody else has
to read, check and sometimes sign off on. Tables in Bower were fine for three
columns of prose and awkward for anything that looked like data, which is most
of what researchers put in them.

This release is the table pass, and almost all of it came from the cohort
telling us what broke.

## What's new

* **Every column resizes, including the last one.** Dragging the right-hand
  edge of a table used to add columns instead of resizing them, because the
  only draggable thing there was the add-column strip. It resizes now, and the
  add-column strips no longer pretend to be resize handles.
* **Banded rows.** Toggle alternating row shading from the table options menu
  or with `Cmd+Shift+K`. Banding carries into a shared read-only view, so
  whoever you send the note to sees the same thing you do.
* **Delete several rows at once.** Selecting five rows and choosing "Delete
  row" used to delete one, because opening the menu quietly replaced your
  selection with whichever row you were hovering. Delete, insert and "Clear row
  contents" now all act on the rows you actually selected.
* **Fit to width.** In the table handle menu, beside duplicate and delete. It
  existed before and nothing rendered it, so a wide or extracted table could
  only be tamed by dragging every column by hand.
* **A scrollbar above the table, as well as below.** A wide table scrolls
  inside its own box, and that scrollbar sat under the last row. On a long
  table it was off screen while you were reading the header, so the columns to
  the right were effectively unreachable. There is now a matching scrollbar
  along the top.
* **Wide tables stop compressing.** Columns no longer squeeze below a readable
  width just because the table is wider than the editor.
* **Table colours survive Word.** Cell and header shading now round-trips
  through `.docx` import and export instead of being dropped on the way.

## Finding the controls

The table menus were reported as hard to find, so the handles now stay visible
while your cursor is anywhere in the table rather than appearing only on hover,
and every trigger carries a tooltip.

## Notes

Banded rows are a screen and share-link feature. They are not carried into
`.docx` or PDF export, so a banded table prints unbanded.

Duplicate, sort and alignment still act on the row you are hovering rather than
on a multi-row selection. That is the next piece of this work, not an oversight.
